OUR HISTORY
International History
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on Wednesday, January 15, 1908 at Howard University and incorporated on January 29, 1913. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first and foremost Black Greek-lettered organization established by college women. Nine Howard University students were led by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle into this beautiful sisterhood in 1908. Four years later, Nellie Quander and her gallant, visionary associates contributed the added dimension of national organization and perpetual membership. This ensured a never-ending stream of eternally young, hopeful and enthusiastic women, dedicated and devoted to service and making Alpha Kappa Alpha supreme for over 100 years.
